Dennis Martire’s Philosophy of Leadership in the Labor Movement

Leading by Service, Not Position
Dennis Martire has built his career on the belief that leadership is not about holding a title but about serving others. Since joining LiUNA in 1990, he has approached every role with a service-first mindset, making worker advocacy his top priority.
Climbing the Ranks with Integrity
From his first position as an International Representative to becoming Vice President and Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager in 2002, Martire’s rise has been marked by integrity and dedication. He consistently prioritized workers’ voices, ensuring they had a seat at the table when decisions impacted their livelihoods.
Empowering Through Choice
A hallmark of Martire’s leadership philosophy was evident in the Route 495 Hot Lanes Project. By giving workers the choice to unionize, he demonstrated his belief that true empowerment comes when laborers are free to decide their future. The overwhelming vote to join LiUNA Local 11 proved that when given agency, workers recognize the benefits of solidarity.
Balancing Advocacy and Collaboration
Martire understands that effective leadership requires collaboration. His work with Montgomery County officials to pass prevailing wage legislation shows how he blends advocacy with negotiation. This balanced approach has earned him respect not only within the union but also among policymakers and community leaders.
A Lasting Model of Leadership
For Martire, leadership is an ongoing responsibility to improve lives. His philosophy combines service, empowerment, and collaboration, creating a model that continues to inspire both current and future labor leaders.
